What the festival is
Lantern festivals turn a zoo into a different place after dark. Enormous illuminated silk-and-steel sculptures of animals, plants and mythological creatures are installed along the paths, and a park most visitors know in daylight becomes a night walk through something closer to a storybook.
The format has become one of the most reliable draws in the American zoo calendar, and Central Florida’s is now well enough established to be described by the zoo as one of Orlando’s dazzling seasonal traditions rather than a novelty.
Why zoos do this
There is a practical answer worth stating plainly. Winter evenings are dead time at a zoo: cold, dark, and historically empty. An event that fills those nights generates operating revenue in a period that otherwise produces almost none, and that revenue pays for animal care in February.
There is also a less cynical answer. A lantern festival brings in people who would not otherwise visit a zoo at all, and they walk the same paths past the same habitats and interpretive signs as anybody else.

Planning a visit
The run is long, just over two months, but it operates on select nights rather than nightly, so check the calendar before committing to a date. Booking a specific evening in advance is generally wise for events of this kind, and holiday-period dates go first.
Sanford is about 30 minutes north of Orlando, which puts the festival within easy reach of anyone already in central Florida for the theme parks and looking for an evening that is not one.
