Monterey Bay Aquarium is giving Monterey County residents free admission from September 8 to 20, 2026. Tickets are limited, first-come first-served, and reservations opened on August 12.
How it works
Eligible residents can reserve up to six tickets per reservation through the aquarium’s website. The free tickets admit guests from 12 p.m. Pacific on the reserved date.
The program is straightforward community access rather than a discount promotion: the aquarium sets aside a block of its capacity, for free, for the people who live around it.
“I’ve felt truly welcomed by the community since joining the Aquarium this spring,” said Dr. Jenny Gray, the aquarium’s chief executive officer. “This has reinforced to me your important role in supporting our mission and conservation work. I’m thrilled to continue offering this small appreciation.”
Why a local-resident window matters
Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the most visited aquariums in the United States, and that is exactly the problem it is solving here. A destination institution in a small county can become somewhere the neighbors never go, priced and crowded for visitors from elsewhere.
A free window with a noon entry time is a deliberate answer to that. It hands residents the afternoon, after the morning rush of ticketed visitors has already gone in.
The aquarium’s newest residents are Suri and Willow, two rescued southern sea otters that spent four years across three institutions preparing for the surrogacy program.
