At about five in the morning on August 31, 2026, a western lowland gorilla was born in the Mensapenvallei at ZOO Antwerpen, in the middle of her family group rather than off in a separate room.
The mother is Mayani, and this is her second infant. The father is Ayo, the group’s silverback, and it is his first. Gestation for the species runs about eight and a half months.
The zoo did not yet know the baby’s sex when it announced the birth, and said so plainly.
Born into the group, not beside it
The detail worth noticing is where the birth happened. Mayani delivered inside the social group, with Ayo, the older half-sisters Thandie and Vizazi, and the rest of the troop present.
A managed gorilla group that is functioning well enough for a mother to give birth in company is not a given. Groups get reorganized, silverbacks arrive from other institutions, and tension around an infant is a real risk. Antwerp’s group handled it.

That is a curator using the biggest news day her section will get all year to point past her own animal. Western lowland gorillas are listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered, driven down by poaching, habitat loss and Ebola outbreaks that have killed gorillas by the thousand in parts of central Africa.
Naming
The zoo took public name suggestions until September 13, with a public vote from September 14 to 30.
