This winter, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago is offering an array of activities to help visitors connect with the natural world and explore the aquatic realm. From an adults-only after-hours event to workshops for teens and overnights for the whole family, there’s something for everyone at Shedd this winter.
For adults, Shedd is introducing its inaugural Ritmo del Mar after-hours event, where guests can enjoy a night of music, culture, cuisine, and mesmerizing animals with an aquatic backdrop like nowhere else in Chicago. With special performances by Projecto 7 and Carpacho y Su Super Combo, guests can dance to the sounds of salsa, cumbia, merengue, and Latin jazz. The event is open to all ages 21 and above, with a photo ID required for entry.
For those looking for an up-close experience with the animals, Shedd’s Penguin Encounters offer a unique opportunity to meet one of the resident penguins. During this 30-minute experience, guests will observe the penguin explore, preen, play, and more, with animal care specialists sharing the penguin’s personal history and Shedd’s conservation work in South Africa with African penguins.
For families and Illinois residents, Shedd is offering free days every Tuesday through Thursday in February, as well as Wednesday and Thursday in March, with free general admission with a valid ID or proof of residency. Additionally, Shedd’s Teen Workshops are a great opportunity for young participants to connect with animals, Shedd staff, and peers, while learning about local and global conservation, the fascinating animals at Shedd and beyond, and the careers that help keep Shedd afloat.
For families, Shedd’s “Asleep with the Fishes: Overnights at Shedd” is a fun way to spend a night at the aquarium and learn what the resident animals do after hours. With the chance to explore open exhibit spaces, create aquatic crafts, complete a scavenger hunt, and more, it’s an unforgettable experience.
