Run for the Zoo 2023: Roaring Back with Exciting Asia Expansion and Malayan Tiger Spotlight

The New Mexico BioPark Society, in collaboration with presenting sponsor Waterstone Mortgage, is thrilled to announce the return of the 36th annual Run for the Zoo event on Sunday, May 7, 2023. With its focus on the highly anticipated Asia expansion and the endangered Malayan tiger, this year’s event promises to be an unforgettable experience for the entire community.

A Beloved Tradition Continues

Run for the Zoo has been an Albuquerque community staple and a favorite event for families for over 35 years. This year, participants of all ages and fitness levels are invited to register and take part in one of New Mexico’s largest races, with a cap of 10,000 participants.

Runners can choose from five different race distances, including a Half Marathon (13+), 10K Timed, 5K Timed, 5K Fitness, and a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk course that weaves through the back of the Zoo.

Supporting the BioPark and Celebrating the Malayan Tiger

This year’s Run for the Zoo event is particularly special, as it highlights the upcoming Asia expansion at the ABQ BioPark and the Malayan tiger. With less than 500 individuals left in the wild, this majestic animal is facing the threat of extinction. The ABQ BioPark is among a select few facilities in North America that will provide a state-of-the-art habitat for the Malayan tiger, contributing to its conservation and raising awareness about the challenges it faces.

As part of the celebration, participants are encouraged to “Stripe up and support your BioPark” by donning striped athletic wear or adding stripes to their faces on race day.

Registration, Event Details, and Sponsorship

Registration for the event is now open, with regular fees ranging from $25 to $70 for both youth and adult participants. Prices will increase in mid-April and again during race weekend. To register and learn more about the event, visit www.runforthezoo.org.

All registered participants will receive an official Run for the Zoo commemorative t-shirt, post-race refreshments, coupons, and free admission to the ABQ BioPark Zoo with their race bib on Race Day.

Run for the Zoo’s mission is to support the BioPark and its conservation efforts, and all proceeds from the event will go towards this important cause. Special thanks go to media sponsors 100.3 The Peak, 94 Rock, KRQE News 13, and New Mexico’s CW for their support.

Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to support the ABQ BioPark, the Malayan tiger, and the upcoming Asia expansion. Register today and join thousands of fellow conservation enthusiasts for a day of fun, fitness, and unforgettable memories at the 36th annual Run for the Zoo event!
