4,200 Carved Pumpkins, and a Living Wall Set to Music

Hundreds of carved pumpkins, each with a different face, set in rows across a long grass-covered bank beside a walkway, curving away into the distance under a blue sky.

The Jack O’Lantern Extravaganza returns to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium from October 2 through November 1, with more than 4,200 hand-carved pumpkins and a finale built around a wall of them choreographed to three songs.

The event, presented by Peoples, is a night walk through carved displays rather than a zoo visit. The zoo is direct about the trade: animals will not be visible in their public habitats during evening hours.

What is new this year

The carving themes added for 2026 include Zoo Residents, Cryptids, Famous Athletes from Western Pennsylvania, One Hit Wonders, Animated Movies, the Pittsburgh Walk of Fame, Japan and the 1970s. An area given over to classic horror films, with new Scary Skeleton movie scenes, is laid out so younger or more squeamish guests can skip it.

The animated Living Wall is the closer, and this year it is set to three songs.

Which night to pick

The zoo has built a different reason into most nights of the week.

  • Monday and Tuesday: 10 percent off food and drink, 20 percent off retail.
  • Wednesday: costumed characters roam the Village for free photo opportunities. Princesses on October 7, Galactic Warriors on October 14, Wizards on October 21, Witch Sisters on October 28.
  • Thursday: adults-only add-ons in the Garden Tent, each $25 on top of event admission. Mix a magic potion with the mixologist Noah Welter on October 8 and 22, see Arcade Comedy Theater on October 15, or go to the Disco’s Un-dead Dance Party on October 29.
  • Friday, October 9 to 30: a seasonal Vendors Village of local artists and makers.

A scavenger hunt comes with every ticket. Returning paid extras include live pumpkin carving, seasonal food and drink, the Night Train and Carousel, pumpkin painting, pumpkin smashing and Spooky Specs glasses.

Why a zoo spends a month on pumpkins

Halloween events are among the biggest earners in the fall calendar at American zoos, and the revenue goes back into the animal and conservation programs that run the other eleven months. Pittsburgh’s recent work includes leading a new Association of Zoos and Aquariums red panda program. The association accredits 255 facilities across 12 countries, Pittsburgh among them.

Tickets and nightly times are on the zoo’s own event page. The run ends November 1.
