The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has a new member in its global community of zoos and aquariums – Walter Zoo. Located in the foothills of the Swiss Alps, this family-run business has been educating visitors on the importance of conservation since its establishment in 1961.
With over 1000 animals in 130 different species, Walter Zoo is a hub of wildlife and education. Its main focus has always been on environmental education, and over half a million children have learned about conservation during visits and workshops.
WAZA CEO Martín Zordan expressed his excitement about Walter Zoo’s membership, stating, “We are proud to have Walter Zoo as our new member. Their work in conservation and potential for the Reverse the Red movement has us thrilled.”
Walter Zoo not only creates habitats for native species, but also actively participates in conservation projects and contributes to education by organizing animal encounters and guided tours. The zoo has ramped up its involvement in in situ conservation since 2020 and is in the process of building a new Species Conservation Centre, set to open in 2024.
In addition to its membership with WAZA, Walter Zoo is also a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), further emphasizing its commitment to conservation on a global scale.
